Futures check-in: Duke is close, Oklahoma State is testing the under
A through–Week 5 check on the ten largest preseason win-total gaps, four guide opinions and ten projected conference champions.
Duke has moved closest to validating an above-market win-total case. At 4–0 through Week 5, it needs two more wins to clear the original 5.5. Louisville, now 2–3, needs just one more loss to finish below 8.5. Those are the clearest pieces of progress on our original comparison board.

The biggest preseason disagreement is moving the other way. Oklahoma State’s 3–1 start has nearly matched our original 3.2 expected wins. Staying below its recorded 6.5 requires a 3–5 finish or worse. Sacramento State’s above-4.5 case is also under pressure: at 1–4, the Hornets need four wins from seven remaining games.

This check-in preserves the ten largest model-versus-market gaps on the published Season Lab board. They are preseason comparisons, separate from our official weekly picks. Market totals and prices are the July 29 SportsBettingDime snapshot; expected wins use August 12 inputs, published August 14. Records include completed games through Week 5, checked October 8. Remaining-win requirements are arithmetic, not updated probabilities.
The original ten, in original gap order
Each row shows the original direction and total, original expected wins, actual record, and remaining route. All ten outcomes remain mathematically unsettled. Regular-season wins only; conference title games and bowls do not count toward these totals.

Duke still visits Georgia Tech, NC State and Miami and hosts Clemson. The early wins have created room for losses without requiring us to call those games easy. Indiana’s 5–0 start leaves its below-10.5 case needing two losses; Ohio State and USC visit, with Michigan and Washington on the road. Texas, 4–0, needs three losses to remain below 9.5, beginning its next stretch against Oklahoma at the neutral-site Cotton Bowl.
The guide’s four editorial opinions
Our season guide separately highlighted Iowa over 7.5 (−125), SMU over 8.5 (−125), LSU under 8.5 (−105) and Indiana under 10.5 (−125). Those recorded prices are dated July 29. Iowa is 4–1 and needs four wins from seven; SMU is 4–1 and needs five. LSU is 4–1 and must lose at least three of seven to remain below nine wins. Indiana’s requirement is above. None is settled.
Checking the original conference champions
The August 14 preseason choices remain the reference point. Georgia and Miami have each reached 5–0 overall and 3–0 in league play; Western Kentucky’s 1–4 start, including an opening conference loss, has made its route harder. Here are all ten original choices, with actual records through Week 5. These league records do not resolve championship tiebreakers or establish current title odds.
