USC meets San José State on Aug. 29 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, an opening-week test of how much continuity Lincoln Riley’s offense can carry into a new year. The Trojans have the stabilizing piece: USC says Jayden Maiava returns after starting all 13 games in 2025, when he threw for 3,711 yards and 24 touchdowns. San José State arrives with considerably less clarity. Its current quarterback room includes Luke Weaver, Hudson Wyatt, CJ Lee, Daniel Rolovich and Robert McDaniel, but the available roster does not establish a starter or snap order.
The decisive matchup is USC’s established backfield against a San José State defense trying to create disruption before the Trojans settle in. Maiava brings 31 career starts, while King Miller returns after rushing for 972 yards and eight touchdowns last season; Waymond Jordan also supplied 576 yards and five scores. That gives USC multiple ways to stay on schedule and force the Spartans’ front and linebackers to tackle cleanly. San José State can answer with returners Ethan Powell and Justin Stearns, each credited with 2.5 tackles for loss in 2025, plus transfer corner Isaiah Buxton. USC’s route to control is straightforward: protect Maiava, lean on Miller and Jordan, and make San José State defend the full field without gifting the visitors short fields. The Spartans’ path is narrower. Their offensive line, including Nebraska transfer Brian Tapu, must avoid negative plays; the quarterback group must convert third downs without turnovers; and the defense needs to prevent explosive gains. Penn State transfer Anthony Ivey gives the quarterback group a new receiving option. If San José State can win field position and keep USC from building rhythm, it can extend the competitive portion of the night. Otherwise, the Trojans’ experienced backfield can dictate the terms.
