Tulane’s visit to Duke on September 5 immediately tests two programs coming off landmark seasons: Tulane reached the 2025 CFP, while Duke won the ACC. Both now enter 2026 without a publicly identified starting quarterback. Duke is replacing Darian Mensah after his high-profile departure, with transfers Walker Eget and Ari Patu among the candidates. Tulane’s roster includes Zeon Chriss-Gremillion and Kadin Semonza in its own unsettled room. That makes this less a routine opener than an early measure of which rebuilt passing game can function cleanly under pressure.
The clearest matchup is Duke’s ground game against Tulane’s returning tacklers. Nate Sheppard gives the Blue Devils a proven centerpiece after rushing for 1,132 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, and veteran center Matt Craycraft should help organize a line whose full combination remains unsettled. Tulane counters with Chris Rodgers and Jack Tchienchou, each coming off an 80-tackle season, so Duke cannot assume the run game will provide easy answers. On the other side, Tulane can pair returning back Jamauri McClure with transfer Jaylin Lucas, challenging a Duke defense that returns productive tacklers Luke Mergott and DaShawn Stone while rebuilding elsewhere.

Tulane’s best route to control is to make the game physical, stay out of long-yardage situations and force Duke’s new quarterback to repeatedly beat a secondary reinforced by transfers Justin Agu and Kajuan Banks. Sustained rushing production from McClure and Lucas would also keep Tulane’s own quarterback from carrying the opener. Duke can flip that script by letting Sheppard set the tempo behind Craycraft, giving Jonathan Brewer’s eventual starter manageable downs and chances to settle in. If Duke’s rebuilt defense contains Tulane early, the Blue Devils can use home field to make the visitors chase the game rather than dictate it.
