Oregon State’s opening-week trip to Houston carries an immediate question: how quickly can the Beavers settle their quarterback situation against a host that already knows where its offense begins? Houston returns Conner Weigman after he threw for 2,705 yards and 25 touchdowns and ran for 703 yards and 11 scores in 2025. Slade Nagle has called him the unquestioned starter. Houston can control the game by letting Weigman’s dual-threat skill set stretch Oregon State, then finding Thomas when coverage tightens. Its rebuilt line is transfer-heavy, but Hurst, Anthony Boswell and Terrill arrive with all-conference or All-America recognition, providing an experienced foundation. Oregon State’s route is practical: keep its quarterback out of long-yardage situations, sustain possessions and make Houston drive the field instead of handing Weigman short fields. If the Beavers keep the pace manageable and make James, Allen and Webb tackle rather than hunt turnovers, the quarterback decision becomes less burdensome. If Houston creates passing downs, its veteran secondary can make that uncertainty decisive.
