Oklahoma State’s trip to Chapman Stadium matters because it is the first real test of an almost total reset. The Cowboys added more than 80 newcomers, including 21 players who had played for Morris at North Texas. Drew Mestemaker is the centerpiece of that migration after throwing for 4,379 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2025, but Oklahoma State enters with its opening-day quarterback still publicly unconfirmed. Tulsa also enters without a publicly established starter. Baylor Hayes brings meaningful in-house experience after producing 2,159 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns and 188 rushing yards last season.
The decisive matchup is Oklahoma State’s transplanted skill core and rebuilt offensive line against Tulsa’s defensive front and returning tacklers. Running back Caleb Hawkins gives the Cowboys proven rushing production after gaining 1,434 yards and scoring 25 touchdowns at North Texas, while receiver Wyatt Young already has timing with Mestemaker. Tulsa needs Zach Williams and Devin Robinson, who combined for 123 tackles last season, to make that continuity uncomfortable. Robinson also recorded six tackles for loss. If Tulsa’s front can keep those defenders free, it can force Oklahoma State’s collection of veteran transfer linemen to prove immediately that experience from several programs has become a cohesive unit.

Oklahoma State can control the game by building around Hawkins and Young as stabilizers, regardless of which quarterback takes the first snap: keep the offense on schedule, give the passer dependable answers and avoid asking a newly assembled line to survive obvious passing downs. Defensively, the Cowboys need their rebuilt interior to hold up so Ethan Wesloski can serve as a communication bridge if he earns a role in Skyler Cassity’s aggressive structure. Tulsa’s path is the inverse: test Oklahoma State’s cohesion early, make the Cowboys sustain drives rather than live on explosive plays and give its own quarterback manageable situations. With no final depth chart established for either side, the cleaner operation should set the terms.
