Baylor and Auburn meet in Atlanta with little room for a soft launch. Auburn is opening the Alex Golesh era, installing a new offense while D.J. Durkin keeps continuity on defense. Baylor is changing just as dramatically on the other side of the ball under Joe Klanderman. The Bears’ quarterback picture is not publicly settled: Florida transfer DJ Lagway worked with Jake Spavital in spring, while Sawyer Robertson remained on the current roster after throwing for 3,681 yards and 31 touchdowns. The decisive fight is up front. Auburn added nine portal offensive linemen after that room emerged as its largest spring concern, and their cohesion will be tested immediately by a Baylor defensive line rebuilt around veteran transfers Hosea Wheeler, Jamaal Whyce Jr., Kamren Washington, Jordan Mack and Zavion Hardy. That matchup governs whether Brown can work through his progressions and checkdowns and whether returning back Jeremiah Cobb, Auburn’s expected leader after rushing for 969 yards last season, has clean entry points. On the other side, Auburn linebacker Xavier Atkins—coming off 84 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and nine sacks—can stress a Baylor line whose starting five remains publicly unsettled.

Baylor can control the game by making its veteran defensive additions useful early: win first down, compress Cobb’s lanes and force Auburn’s new offense to operate from obvious passing situations. Offensively, the Bears do not need to settle every quarterback question in one night; they need clean protection, manageable downs and touches for proven returners Caden Knighten and Ashtyn Hawkins. Auburn’s cleaner path is to let Cobb stabilize the offense, give Brown time to reach his safe outlets and keep the quarterback from carrying the rushing burden. Defensively, Durkin can lean on continuity and Atkins’ disruption to pressure Baylor’s rebuilt front without exposing a secondary that added seven transfers.
