The sharpest matchup is Sam Houston’s pass protection against Donnie Smith and Troy’s pressure package. Sam Houston’s route to control is straightforward: run through Brown and McCaskill, use short throws to prevent Troy from turning Smith loose, and force the Trojans to defend the full width of the field before taking selective shots. That approach would also protect an unsettled quarterback and keep Troy’s offense waiting. Troy can take command by winning early downs with Smith and its pressure package, then using the returning experience of Kilcrease and Lovett to sustain drives rather than chasing explosives. If the Trojans create obvious passing situations, home-field pressure shifts toward Sam Houston; if the Bearkats avoid them, this becomes a much more patient, possession-by-possession opener.
