San José State’s best path is to simplify the opening phase: protect whichever quarterback wins the job, use Amisone’s running ability if he has a role, and let transfer tackle Brian Tapu and receiver Anthony Ivey help the offense find dependable answers. Possession and field position can keep the Spartans from asking an unsettled passing game to carry the night. Eastern Michigan can take control by leaning on its returning production, keeping its quarterback on schedule behind the reconfigured line and forcing San José State to tackle repeatedly. On defense, Bryce Llewellyn and Barry Manning give the Eagles experienced producers to build around. Whichever team turns its offseason pieces into clean, low-stress possessions first should own the game’s shape.
