West Georgia’s trip to Fifth Third Stadium on Sept. 3 gives Kennesaw State an immediate test of how quickly a heavily reworked offense can settle in. Kennesaw State enters the opener with Rickie Collins, Landon Varnes, Jamarcus Harrison and Skyler Williams listed in the quarterback room, but no opening-day starter or snap order has been established. That uncertainty matters more than any preseason label: Kennesaw State must find functional quarterback play without allowing an unsettled rotation to fracture its possessions. For West Georgia, the opportunity is to make that transition uncomfortable from the first series.
The clearest matchup is West Georgia’s offense against the productive 2025 core still listed on Kennesaw State’s defense. Linebacker Baron Hopson recorded 139 tackles and 10 tackles for loss last season, while Tywon Christopher logged 81 tackles and Donovan Westmoreland supplied four sacks. Together, those numbers place Kennesaw State’s most established production in the front seven. West Georgia’s offensive line has to keep Hopson and Christopher from dictating early downs, then account for Westmoreland when the passing situation becomes obvious. If West Georgia repeatedly faces long-yardage downs, Kennesaw State can let its most accomplished returning defenders set the terms.

Kennesaw State’s cleanest path is to let that defensive experience buy time for the new-look offense: win first down, create short fields and keep the quarterback assignment manageable. The current roster also includes additions Brayden Munroe and Zion Booker at receiver, giving the offense more pieces as it builds a passing game around an undetermined quarterback. West Georgia can control the game by forcing extended drives, changing the picture for whichever quarterback plays and refusing to give Kennesaw State easy possessions through mistakes. The longer West Georgia keeps the home offense searching for rhythm, the more pressure shifts onto Kennesaw State; the sooner Kennesaw State’s defense takes over, the more comfortable this opener becomes.
