South Dakota State’s trip to Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium gives Northwestern a demanding opening-week test and the Jackrabbits a high-profile road opportunity against a Big Ten opponent. Northwestern returns proven production at the skill positions: quarterback Preston Stone threw for 2,400 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2025, Caleb Komolafe rushed for 941 yards and 11 scores, and Griffin Wilde caught 71 passes for 880 yards and eight touchdowns. Northwestern’s cleanest route to control is to let the run game simplify the quarterback’s work, protect the ball and force South Dakota State to defend the full width of the field. Defensively, returning front leader Michael Kilbane, veteran linebacker Braydon Brus and nickel Braden Turner can help make the Jackrabbits earn long drives; Turner also brings proven takeaway production. South Dakota State’s route is less about matching names than shaping possessions: win field position, create negative plays, get off the field on third down and prevent Wilde or Komolafe from turning routine touches into game-changing gains. If the Jackrabbits can avoid turnovers and keep Northwestern’s offense from dictating pace, they can sustain pressure throughout the opener.
