Ohio’s trip to Memorial Stadium on September 5 is an early test of continuity against reinvention. The Bobcats bring back much of the production that powered their 2025 running game, including Sieh Bangura and Duncan Brune, while Parker Navarro remains in a quarterback room whose opening-day order has not been announced. Nebraska is replacing major production at quarterback and running back. UNLV transfer Anthony Colandrea, the 2025 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, is the leading quarterback option, but the Cornhuskers likewise have not formally settled the starter or backup order.
The matchup that should decide the afternoon is Ohio’s rushing attack against Nebraska’s rebuilt front seven. Bangura ran for 1,392 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, Brune added 585 and eight, and Navarro contributed 886 and nine on the ground. Nebraska needs sturdier run fits from a group led by returning linebacker Vincent Shavers Jr. and linemen Riley Van Poppel, Williams Nwaneri and Cameron Lenhardt. Transfers Owen Chambliss and Dexter Foster add experience at linebacker, but cohesion in the new 4-2-5 matters immediately. If Ohio repeatedly reaches favorable down-and-distance, Nebraska’s pass rush will have fewer chances to show the disruption it lacked in 2025.

Ohio can control this game by staying patient with its backs, using quarterback movement when the personnel allows and forcing Nebraska to tackle through long possessions. That would also keep the Cornhuskers’ new offensive pieces from finding rhythm. Nebraska’s path starts with its retooled offensive line: center Justin Evans and tackle Elijah Pritchett return, while several experienced transfers are competing around them. Clean protection would let Colandrea’s mobility and off-schedule creativity complement a veteran receiving group that includes Nyziah Hunter. Nebraska does not need to chase instant fireworks; it needs efficient early downs, manageable pressure on its quarterback and enough defensive penetration to make Ohio throw from obvious passing situations.
