Western Michigan’s trip to Michigan matters because it is an immediate test of whether Bryce Underwood’s offseason development carries into Jason Beck’s new offense. Kyle Whittingham said Underwood entered spring as the clear No. 1 and improved his footwork and decision-making, though he remained a work in progress. Stable protection would let Underwood play on schedule, combine his running ability with Jordan Marshall’s ground game and find Andrew Marsh, who caught 45 passes for 651 yards last season. Western Michigan needs long possessions built around Lowry and Buckley, limited exposure to Michigan’s defensive-line rotation and disruption from James Camden, who recorded 85 tackles last season. That formula does not require a settled quarterback hierarchy before kickoff; it requires the Broncos to avoid obvious passing situations. Michigan controls the afternoon by making Underwood’s job orderly. Western Michigan controls it by making every possession costly and denying the Wolverines an easy rhythm.
