Opening week at Rice-Eccles Stadium gives Utah an immediate test of how much can change around a productive returning quarterback without changing the offense’s core. Joe Coles reported that Devon Dampier is healthy after offseason surgery for a sports hernia, welcome news after that injury and an ankle issue limited him during a 2025 season in which he still produced 2,490 passing yards, 835 rushing yards and 34 total touchdowns. The decisive matchup is Utah’s entirely rebuilt offensive line against Idaho’s defensive front. Utah controls the game by keeping Dampier out of obvious passing situations, leaning on Wayshawn Parker and making Idaho defend every option created by motion and the quarterback run. Defensively, Johnathan Hall’s communication at linebacker should be important as Utah breaks in an all-new starting front; Utah needs that unit to set edges, tackle cleanly and deny explosives. Idaho’s route is narrower but clear: protect the ball, avoid drive-killing mistakes, flip field position and make Utah repeatedly convert third downs. If Idaho can keep possessions valuable and pressure Utah’s new lines into mistakes, it can prevent the opener from settling into the rhythm Utah wants.
