2026 season preview
Marcel Reed has proven targets around him, but new systems, new linemen and demanding road trips will test whether the Aggies can turn an 11-win season into lasting progress.

Texas A&M enters Mike Elko’s third season trying to prove that 11 wins in 2025 were a foundation rather than a high-water mark. Losses to Texas and Miami ended that campaign with unfinished business, and the response will depend less on collecting talent than connecting it. The Aggies are changing offensive leadership, replacing most of the offensive line and rebuilding parts of the defensive front seven. Their best route forward is clear: make life easier for Marcel Reed, establish dependable play in the trenches and arrive at the schedule’s decisive stretch with those new combinations intact.

Team identity
Last season, Texas A&M tried to lean on the running game; the approach consistently kept the offense on schedule.
Why it matters
Neither offensive unit clearly carried the other, so first-down execution decides whether Texas A&M can stay on plan.
At a glance
The essential 2026 season outlook.
New offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch inherit a useful starting point in Reed. Wiggins told beat reporter Tony Catalina that he favors 11 personnel but will tailor the offense to the roster, and he has simplified terminology for Reed. The intended benefit is practical: fewer complications between the call and the snap could help Reed make quicker decisions, particularly on late downs. Freshman Helaman Casuga’s winning touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Luke Braden in the spring game offered an encouraging moment for the younger depth, but it did not settle the pecking order behind Reed or at tight end.
The receiving corps gives the transition its strongest measure of continuity. Reed identified Ashton Bethel-Roman, Mario Craver, Terry Bussey and Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton as his primary targets at SEC Kickoff. Craver returns after 917 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2025, production that helped earn him first-team all-purpose and second-team receiver recognition from SEC media. Horton drew favorable spring reviews and brings size alongside Craver’s explosiveness. If that pairing carries its promise into the season, Wiggins should have multiple ways to challenge defenses outside rather than asking Reed to manufacture offense by himself.
Everything becomes harder if the reconstructed offensive line cannot settle quickly. Center Mark Nabou Jr. is the lone returning starter from last season’s unit. Elko said A&M added four transfer linemen with SEC starting experience, a sensible response to the turnover but not an instant substitute for cohesion. The opening competition must produce five players who can communicate and protect Reed before the schedule stiffens. The backfield is similarly open: spring coverage positioned Jamarion Morrow as a serious contender alongside Rueben Owens, with freshman KJ Edwards also receiving work. Pass protection and receiving ability could be as important as rushing flashes in determining that rotation.
Elko’s defensive standard begins up front, where another round of NFL departures requires the Aggies to reload. Senior DJ Hicks is the established anchor after recording 26 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in 2025. His presence gives the line a proven interior piece, but its overall strength will depend on younger and transferred players becoming reliable contributors around him. That development has consequences beyond the line itself: consistent disruption would ease the burden on a linebacker group navigating significant change and allow the secondary to play from more favorable situations.
Linebacker contains the defense’s most important availability question. Captain Daymion Sanford left the April 18 spring game on a cart with his lower left leg immobilized, and no diagnosis or return timetable was subsequently established publicly. His status matters because he was expected to help lead the transition after Taurean York and Scooby Williams. Senior transfer Ray Coney supplied an encouraging alternative during the final open spring practice, when Catalina observed him directing the defense and disrupting the offense. Behind that group, captain Marcus Ratcliffe called this the deepest and best secondary of his A&M tenure, highlighting veteran safeties Dalton Brooks and Tawfiq Byard, three playable corners and competition at nickel. That is Ratcliffe’s assessment, but experienced depth there could give Elko flexibility while the front seven takes shape.
Special teams offers one established advantage in Bussey, who averaged 23.4 yards on 18 kick returns in 2025 and ranked third in the SEC in total kick-return yards. Transfer kicker David Olano made multiple field goals during spring work, though the starting assignment remains unsettled. The schedule provides a brief installation window: Missouri State, Arizona State and Kentucky visit Kyle Field before a Sept. 26 trip to LSU. Later road games at Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma will test the Aggies away from home, while Tennessee visits before a closing sequence of Oklahoma on Nov. 21 and Texas at Kyle Field on Nov. 28.
Those pressure points bring the season back to Elko’s central challenge. Reed, Craver, Nabou, Hicks and Bussey give Texas A&M recognizable strengths at consequential spots. Horton could broaden the passing game, Coney may be essential at linebacker, and Sanford’s recovery could materially alter the defense’s outlook. The questions are concentrated rather than mysterious: Can the new offense become comfortable quickly? Can the rebuilt lines hold up against SEC opponents? Can the Aggies finish better than they did a year ago? Texas A&M has enough proven talent to pursue another strong season, but its progress will be measured by cohesion and late-season performance, not preseason possibility.

Profile high point
Pressure held the profile's highest percentile position.Profile low point
Big-play prevention held the lowest percentile position among the profile's strength measures.Front-seven disruption is what Texas A&M can trust most.
Why it matters
The defense has its best route to changing protection rules before coverage must hold; explosive-play creation remains the first counter an opponent should test.
Big-play creation is the concern opponents should keep testing while front-seven disruption tries to steady Texas A&M.
What matters
Texas A&M's explosive-play creation finished below the national average last season.
Texas A&M's best path is to lean on the running game, then keep both the pass and run available because neither part of the offense has to carry the plan alone; extra possessions give that plan time to build.
What matters
Texas A&M's run-leaning structure played at a fast pace. Passing finished top-tier and rushing finished strong, without a clear split between them.
Inside the team

The down-to-down question that determines whether the offense can keep both the run and pass available.
Opponents have to win first down before Texas A&M can keep both answers available.
Why it matters
Putting Texas A&M behind the chains limits the offense without requiring the defense to guess run or pass.
The pace, play selection, and methods this offense uses to stay on schedule.
Why it matters
More possessions give Texas A&M's strengths additional chances to build, but they also leave more time to recover from mistakes.
Texas A&M's prior passing record was top-tier.
Why it matters
A repeatable pass game can let Texas A&M punish loaded boxes without relying on low-frequency deep completions.
Texas A&M's prior rushing record was strong.
Why it matters
A sustainable run game keeps Texas A&M's play action credible and limits obvious passing situations.
Texas A&M's explosive-play results were mixed rather than a defining edge.
Why it matters
A big play can still flip a possession, but last season's results do not make explosiveness something this team can rely on.
How consistently the offense creates manageable situations and the defense prevents them.
Texas A&M won ordinary downs on both sides of the ball.
Why it matters
Texas A&M's success rate shows whether it can sustain drives and get stops without relying on sacks, turnovers, or isolated big plays.
Opponent-adjusted EPA identifies the pass game as Texas A&M's stronger offensive unit.
Why it matters
If an opponent removes the first passing answer, the run game's lower adjusted value becomes the key counter to test.
Where the defense can create pressure, control the run, and end drives.
Texas A&M's prior defense was top-tier overall and strongest in disruption.
Why it matters
Opponents can start by testing the run fits early and trying to keep the offense balanced, though that unit still finished strong. Texas A&M's disruption can still create negative plays and end drives, so the offense has to prove the opening will hold up.
Texas A&M's available disruption measures ranked among the best in the country last season; a charted pressure rate is not available.
Why it matters
Sustained disruption can create negative plays and give Texas A&M a better chance to end drives before third down.
