2026 season preview

SMU enters 2026 with a clear source of stability and a broad set of questions around it. Rhett Lashlee’s tempo-based spread remains the foundation, and Kevin Jennings returns with the experience to keep it moving. But the Mustangs are replacing their two leading rushers, rebuilding the receiving and tight-end pecking orders, deciding a pivotal left-tackle competition and trying to replace their most productive pass rushers. The central question is not what SMU wants to be. It is how quickly a changed supporting cast can make the familiar plan function at full speed.
Continuity starts with Lashlee. SMU lists Garin Justice, D’Eriq King and Rob Likens in offensive coordinator roles, with Justice also responsible for the line and King coaching the quarterbacks. Maurice Crum Jr. and Rickey Hunley Jr. are listed in defensive coordinator roles. That structure lets SMU keep its offensive language, tempo and tight-end flexibility intact while concentrating on new combinations rather than a wholesale schematic change.

Detailed football intelligence
The full team identity, offense, defense, and supporting evidence.
Team identity
Last season, SMU tried to lean on the passing game; the approach gave the offense a dependable starting point.
Why it matters
The passing game was SMU's more dependable way to stay ahead of the chains; opponents have to interrupt that rhythm without giving the run an easy box.
The essential 2026 season outlook.
Jennings is the clearest advantage. SMU says he enters the season with 19 career wins as a starter, 7,709 passing yards, 55 touchdown passes and a 14-2 mark as an ACC starter. Those numbers show how much responsibility he can absorb while roles shift around him. Behind Jennings, Timothy Hamm identified redshirt freshman Ty Hawkins as the principal young option in the spring discussion. The starter offers substantial continuity; the readiness of the reserve remains an important unknown.
The backfield has a plausible answer, not yet a settled formula. According to Mike Craven, Cal transfer Kendrick Raphael arrived after 13 rushing touchdowns and 1,084 all-purpose yards in 2025 and is expected to pair with Derrick McFall and Dramekco Green. Raphael brings ACC production, but SMU still has to determine how those three divide the work and whether the group can provide reliable early-down efficiency after the departure of the two leading rushers.
The pass-catching reset is larger. Craven reported that Jordan Hudson and Romello Height departed after combining for 104 catches, 1,404 yards and nine touchdowns in 2025, while experienced transfers Yannick Smith and Jalen Hale joined the receiver room. At tight end, Randy Pittman, Theo Melin-Ohrstrom and Trey Jackson arrived after Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland left; Pittman had 23 catches for 208 yards and two scores at Florida State in 2025. Lashlee has options, but Jennings must still establish whom he trusts on third down and where the explosive plays will come from.
Protection may decide how quickly that chemistry develops. Hamm identified Andrew Chamblee, Dramodd Odoms and Max Wright in the left-tackle competition. PJ Williams is the established anchor; the ACC lists him as a second-team Phil Steele preseason All-American and a fourth-team Athlon preseason All-American. Williams gives the line a proven center of gravity, but the blind-side choice will help determine whether SMU can make full use of Jennings’ experience.
The defense is undertaking its own rebuild at the point of attack. SMU added Malcolm Alcorn-Crowder, Ira Singleton, Marques White and Christian Davis after losing Cameron Robertson and Isaiah Smith, its most productive 2025 pass rushers. White’s 11 tackles for loss and five sacks at UMass in 2025 provide a tangible starting point. Clemson transfer Jamal Anderson and Bowling Green transfer Caden Marshall reinforce linebacker, while Alcorn-Crowder was added inside to occupy blockers. The aim is straightforward: keep the second level cleaner and recreate disruption without asking one newcomer to replace everything.
That rebuild is inseparable from the cornerback question. Hamm identified Marcellus Barnes, Jaelyn Davis-Robinson and William Nettles among the players under evaluation after SMU allowed too many explosive passes in 2025. If the new front creates pressure quickly, it can protect a group still seeking consistency. If it does not, the corners will have to hold up longer, making the defense’s two largest uncertainties compound each other.
The schedule offers little easing-in time. SMU opens at Florida State on Labor Day night and visits Louisville in Week 3, placing two significant road tests inside the first three games. A November trip to Notre Dame adds another demanding stage before the regular-season finale at Stanford. The road sequence means new targets, tackles, rushers and corners will be tested before every role feels settled.
That leaves SMU with a compelling balance of certainty and risk. Lashlee’s structure and Jennings’ experience mean the offense is not starting from scratch, and the additions supply multiple candidates rather than empty rooms. Yet the most consequential answers sit at premium stress points: left tackle, trusted receiver, pass rush and corner. If those areas stabilize early, the Mustangs can play through their established identity. If they do not, even a proven quarterback will spend the season compensating for the reconstruction around him.

Profile high point
Big-play creation held the profile's highest percentile position.Profile low point
The run game held the lowest percentile position among the profile's strength measures.Big-play creation is what SMU can trust most.
Why it matters
The offense has its best route to changing field position without requiring flawless drive efficiency; rushing structure remains the first counter an opponent should test.
The run game is the concern opponents should keep testing while big-play creation tries to steady SMU.
What matters
SMU's rushing structure finished below the national average last season.
For SMU, the cleanest script is to use the passing game to stay on schedule and finish drives; extra possessions give that plan time to build.
What matters
SMU's pass-first structure played at a fast pace. The pass game finished strong, while the run game finished below-average.

The down-to-down question that determines whether the offense can keep both the run and pass available.
Opponents have to break SMU's passing rhythm before it owns early downs.
Why it matters
If SMU keeps finding routine completions, the defense cannot load the box or turn the rush loose.
The pace, play selection, and methods this offense uses to stay on schedule.
SMU played at a fast pace in 2025.
Why it matters
More possessions give SMU's strengths additional chances to build, but they also leave more time to recover from mistakes.
SMU's prior passing record was strong.
Why it matters
A repeatable pass game can let SMU punish loaded boxes without relying on low-frequency deep completions.
SMU's prior rushing record was below-average.
Why it matters
When SMU's run game cannot stay on schedule, protection and passing-down execution carry more of the offense.
SMU both created and limited explosive plays at a strong prior-season level.

SMU's down-to-down results were above-average overall.
Why it matters
SMU's success rate shows whether it can sustain drives and get stops without relying on sacks, turnovers, or isolated big plays.
Opponent-adjusted EPA identifies the pass game as SMU's stronger offensive unit.
Why it matters
If an opponent removes the first passing answer, the run game's lower adjusted value becomes the key counter to test.
Where the defense can create pressure, control the run, and end drives.
SMU's prior defense was top-tier overall and strongest in run front.
Why it matters
Opponents can test routine throws without assuming they will stay on schedule; SMU's run front can still create long-yardage without overloading the box before that probe becomes dependable.
SMU's available disruption measures ranked in a strong national range last season; a charted pressure rate is not available.
Why it matters
Sustained disruption can create negative plays and give SMU a better chance to end drives before third down.
SMU's disruption regularly finished at the quarterback.
What matters
Both sack production and front-seven disruption cleared the FBS midpoint.
Why it matters
A dependable run front can let SMU create obvious passing downs without committing extra bodies to the box.
