Week 6 upset watch: USC, Iowa and Michigan State
USC can sustain drives, Iowa can keep the score down, and Michigan State has a vulnerable secondary to test. Each path has a catch.
An upset watch needs a football argument. These three market underdogs have plausible routes to outright wins, with specific conditions to watch. DraftKings spreads below were captured via CFBD on October 8 at 8:28 a.m. ET.
Win chances come from Saturday Index's locked October 4 forecast, without recalculation for this week's availability reports. They describe winning the game; covering the spread is different. This is editorial analysis, separate from official Rule 5 selections.
USC at Penn State: Keep Maiava on schedule
Saturday, October 10, 7:30 p.m. ET. USC +1.5; locked win chance: 56%.
USC's path starts before third down. Penn State surrendered 413 rushing yards to Northwestern last week. Testing those run fits early could give Jayden Maiava manageable passing situations in the White Out. USC converted 37 of 71 third downs, 52.1%, through its first six games. The Trojans have shown they can sustain drives.
Penn State still has disruptive personnel. Tony Rojas entered the week with 7.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions across five games. Putting USC behind the chains changes that defense's assignment. USC does not need every run to become an explosive play. Modest gains can keep the full playbook available and limit the obvious passing situations in which Rojas can attack.
Thursday morning's conference report lists USC defensive tackles Jahkeem Stewart and Jide Abasiri as questionable. If the interior rotation is depleted, Penn State has a clearer route to controlling possessions itself. USC's case depends on execution, with its own personnel uncertainty.

Iowa at Washington: A live chance with a quarterback condition
Friday, October 9, 9 p.m. ET TV window. Iowa +3; locked win chance: 49%.
The Hawkeyes allowed 12.6 points per game through five games, and their offensive line surrendered five sacks. Protect the quarterback, avoid short fields, and make Washington earn touchdowns through sustained drives. The defensive average includes shutouts of Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa, so context matters.
Iowa's 180.2 rushing yards per game includes 298 against NIU and 422 against UNI. Our calculation excluding those performances leaves 60.3 rushing yards per game across Iowa State, Michigan and Ohio State. Reliable passing looks essential; the ground game has struggled against tougher opponents.
Iowa's five-game rushing figures
Hank Brown remained questionable in the conference report checked Thursday. Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday that Brown was limited and Jeremy Hecklinski would play if he could not go. The frozen 49% establishes a competitive baseline but cannot answer that personnel question. This watch is conditional on Iowa's quarterback situation.

Illinois at Michigan State: Find the passing floor
Saturday, October 10, 3:30 p.m. ET TV window. Michigan State +2.5; locked win chance: 54%.
Illinois allowed 255 passing yards per game through five games. Michigan State's opening is clear: find easy completions and keep Alessio Milivojevic out of repeated fourth-down emergencies. Punter Rhys Dakin's 49.6-yard average through five games can help field position when a drive stalls.
Michigan State's October 6 notes
The downside is substantial. Milivojevic threw for only 103 yards against Wisconsin, and Cam Edwards is out for the season. Illinois receiver Collin Dixon's eight receiving touchdowns through five games add pressure to finish defensive possessions. The Spartans need actual improvement in passing efficiency to justify the model's modest preference. The useful early signal is a sequence of completions that sustains a drive and lets the defense recover between possessions.
Michigan State's notes and availability update
Watch the early downs: USC's distance to gain, Iowa's passing functionality and Michigan State's ability to move the chains. Those are the tests that make this more than a list of underdogs.
