Houston has rushed for 616 yards in two games. Texas Tech has held seven consecutive opponents below 100 rushing yards. That is the matchup to watch Friday night: can the Cougars keep Conner Weigman out of third-and-long?

Can Houston stay ahead of the chains?
The Cougars ran for 228 yards in a 33–20 win over Oregon State, then added 388 against Southern. The Oregon State game is the more useful comparison: Texas Tech faced the same opponent a week later and held the Beavers to 55 rushing yards.
Four or five yards on first down would let Houston keep both the run and pass available on second down. Repeated short gains would leave Weigman facing longer passing situations, with Tech’s front able to concentrate on reaching the quarterback. That is why Houston’s early-down rushing matters beyond its final yardage total.
There is another route for Houston. Oregon State threw for 417 yards against Tech last week, even though the Red Raiders won 35–24. If Tech shuts down the run again, Weigman will have to find openings through the air. The Beavers showed that passing production was possible; Houston still has to turn its own opportunities into points.
Can Tech establish its own run game?
J’Koby Williams ran for 116 yards against Oregon State and has 187 through two games. Houston held the Beavers to 26 rushing yards in the opener. Williams’ carries will test whether that Houston performance holds up against a different offensive line and backfield.
Tech also needed a late passing touchdown last week: Will Hammond found Coy Eakin for the go-ahead score with 6:31 remaining. If Houston makes rushing yards difficult to find, Hammond’s ability to sustain drives becomes just as important as Weigman’s.

Texas Tech has won nine straight home games and enters as the model’s clear favorite. Watch Houston’s first-down runs and the distance Weigman faces on third down. Consistent gains would give the Cougars more ways to attack; repeated long-yardage situations would put more of the game on their passing offense.
