Week 7 preview: Bloomington sets the tone for a massive Saturday
Ohio State–Indiana at noon. Alabama–Tennessee and Penn State–Michigan in the afternoon. Notre Dame–BYU after dark. The matchups, players and early model view for October 17.
Start in Bloomington and keep the afternoon clear. Week 7 stacks a Big Ten showdown, the Third Saturday in October and Penn State’s trip to Michigan into the first two television windows. Notre Dame’s visit to BYU gives the night a different kind of test: an unbeaten contender taking its offense into Provo.

Ohio State at Indiana: the game that starts the day
Noon ET · Memorial Stadium, Bloomington · Ohio State by 2.2.
Indiana’s escape at Nebraska exposed the tension in this matchup. The Hoosiers spent much of the afternoon without the ball, then won with 75- and 44-yard touchdown passes from Josh Hoover to Nick Marsh. Those explosive plays kept the game alive. Ohio State will try to make Indiana earn its points in smaller pieces.
The Buckeyes just held Maryland to 146 total yards in a 45–16 win. On offense, Bo Jackson ran for 107 yards and Jeremiah Smith added 93 receiving yards. Our margin is only 2.2 points in Ohio State’s favor, making this the tightest of the four headline games in the early model view.
Watch Marsh after the catch and Smith’s matchups on the perimeter. The coverage attention each receiver attracts can create opportunities elsewhere; the defense that tackles cleanly underneath has a better chance of keeping the game on its terms.

Alabama at Tennessee: no time to dwell on Georgia
3:30 p.m. ET · Neyland Stadium · Alabama by 8.1.
Alabama’s 20–17 loss to Georgia turned on a second half in which the Tide scored only three points. Keelon Russell finished with 185 passing yards. The assignment in Knoxville is to turn possessions into sustained scoring drives before crowd noise and the rivalry make the margin for error smaller.
The model still favors Alabama by more than a touchdown. That sets up a useful test of the reaction to one close loss: has the team’s underlying strength changed, or has the conversation moved faster than the evidence? Watch early-down efficiency and whether Russell can avoid repeated third-and-long situations.

Penn State at Michigan: find a ground game
3:30 p.m. ET · Michigan Stadium · Michigan by 6.7.
Penn State managed 68 rushing yards in its 31–23 loss to USC. That leaves a clear point of emphasis for Ann Arbor: the Nittany Lions need an offense that can stay ahead of the chains instead of asking the passing game to rescue possession after possession.
Our projection favors Michigan by 6.7. The first few series should tell us plenty. If Penn State is consistently facing manageable third downs, the game can look very different from one built around obvious passing situations. Finishing drives also matters after a loss in which field goals kept Penn State close without putting USC away.

Notre Dame at BYU: Walton’s next stage
7:30 p.m. ET · LaVell Edwards Stadium · Notre Dame by 12.4.
Jonaz Walton’s 181-yard afternoon against Stanford gave Notre Dame a new headline. The next question is whether that rushing threat travels. His 97- and 40-yard touchdowns were reminders that a defense can fit most of a series correctly and still lose it on one snap.
BYU has to balance attention to the run with CJ Carr’s passing threat. Notre Dame is favored by 12.4 in our early projection. Watch whether BYU can make the Irish assemble long drives: preventing a quick touchdown keeps the stadium involved and creates more chances for a drive-ending mistake.

Florida at Texas starts at noon ET, giving the Longhorns an immediate response game after Oklahoma. Georgia hosts Auburn at 3:30 p.m., alongside Missouri at Ole Miss. Florida State visits Miami at 7 p.m., and Nebraska at Oregon carries the schedule into the late window at 11 p.m. ET. Rivalries and difficult road assignments leave plenty to follow beyond the headline four.
