Louisiana Tech hosts Northwestern State on Sept. 5 at Joe Aillet Stadium in opening week, a game that should begin to clarify a crowded Bulldogs quarterback picture. The current roster includes Blake Baker, Trey Kukuk, Mason Welch, Brady Vodicka and Jackson Bradley, but no opening-day starter or snap order has been established. Baker supplied 1,252 passing yards and 260 rushing yards last season; Kukuk added 644 through the air and 609 on the ground. That proven production gives Louisiana Tech multiple ways to structure the offense while making the allocation of snaps a central point to watch.

Kukuk’s 2025 rushing production can stress edge discipline, while Baker’s prior passing work can make the Demons defend every part of the field. Around them, Louisiana Tech must identify reliable targets after its returning-production snapshot showed less returning receiving value than passing or rushing value. Oklahoma State transfer Talyn Shettron is one new option in that group. Defender Jadon Mayfield remains on the roster after recording 61 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, and Tulane transfer Joshua Brantley adds an edge option. Their ability to create negative plays could keep the quarterback rotation from becoming comfortable.

Louisiana Tech’s route to control is to settle on the quarterback package that best balances efficient throws with quarterback runs, then let Mayfield and the defensive front dictate down-and-distance. Northwestern State’s route is clear: win field position, avoid negative plays, extend possessions on third down and prevent explosive gains. If the Demons make the Bulldogs drive the length of the field and turn a deep quarterback room into contested decisions, they can keep pressure on the home side.
