Maine at App State

The decisive matchup is App State's rushing operation against Maine's defensive front and linebackers. Rashod Dubinion returns after producing 868 rushing yards and 27 receptions in 2025, and Jaquari Lewis is also back after adding 618 rushing yards, six rushing touchdowns and 32 catches. Those are two experienced ways to keep an unsettled quarterback out of obvious passing situations. Maine's challenge is not merely making first contact; it is fitting gaps cleanly, tackling without giving away extra yards and accounting for both backs as receivers. App State also returns Colton Phares, who recorded 101 tackles, two sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss last season.

App State can control the night by making the backfield the foundation of the plan: stay ahead of the chains, use the backs in the passing game and ask whichever quarterback plays to operate from favorable situations. Maine's route is narrower but clear. Maine needs to win early downs, force longer-yardage decisions on whichever quarterback plays and keep its defense from absorbing a heavy snap count. Offensively, that means protecting possession, avoiding short fields and sustaining enough drives to prevent Dubinion and Lewis from setting the rhythm. If Maine disrupts that rhythm, the uncertainty at quarterback becomes central; if App State runs efficiently, it can keep that question from defining the opener.
