Rhode Island’s trip to Lincoln Financial Field puts an immediate test in front of Temple. The Owls bring a five-man quarterback room into Week 1, with Ajani Sheppard, Jaxon Smolik, Camren Boykin, Brady Palmer and Brody Norman all listed, but the opening-day starter and snap order are not yet established. That makes this more than a routine early-September matchup. Temple needs to find out quickly who can run the offense under game pressure, while Rhode Island has an opportunity to challenge an FBS opponent away from home. The first answer will come from how confidently Temple handles its most important position once the game begins.
The decisive matchup should be Temple’s supporting cast against Rhode Island’s defensive front and coverage units. Running back Hunter Smith returns after producing 403 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 2025, while wide receiver Colin Chase brings back 40 catches, 414 yards and four scores. The pass-catching group also adds wide receivers Jayce Freeman and Kenedy Uzoma and tight end Joey Schlaffer. If that group creates manageable situations and clear throws, Temple can protect whichever quarterback takes the first snap. Rhode Island’s defense, in turn, can make that quarterback prove he can handle pressure and changing coverages without leaning on easy early-down gains.

Temple’s cleanest path is to let Smith and the offensive line set the pace, then use Chase and the newcomers to give the quarterback defined answers. Defensively, Curly Ordonez returns after totaling 69 tackles, eight tackles for loss and a sack last season; disrupting Rhode Island’s run game could keep the Owls from spending long stretches on defense. Rhode Island can take control by winning early downs, limiting big plays for Temple’s receivers and extending drives that keep the Owls’ unsettled passing operation on the sideline. With the quarterback question hanging over Temple, the matchup turns less on preseason assumptions than on which side establishes a dependable offensive rhythm first.
