Houston Christian’s trip to Rice Stadium on Sept. 5 gives both teams an immediate test of how quickly unsettled quarterback rooms can find direction. Rice’s route to control is straightforward: lean on Jackson and Hardeman, protect whichever quarterback gets the call, and let a defense featuring returning lineman Chibby Nwajuaku create negative plays. The Owls also added linebacker Austin Harnetiaux, cornerback Jamir Benjamin and safety Caden VerMaas, giving every level of the defense a new option without guaranteeing roles. Houston Christian’s path is to avoid handing Rice short fields, stay out of obvious passing downs and make its own quarterback decision work through efficient, low-risk possessions.
