2025 record: 9-3 · Pac-12

Portland State’s Week 1 trip to Snapdragon Stadium gives San Diego State an immediate test of how smoothly a familiar offense can restart. The Aztecs return nearly all of their 2025 offensive production, but familiarity does not answer the most important question. Their current quarterback room includes Jayden Denegal, Bert Emanuel Jr., Kyle Crum, Draiden Trudeau and JP Mialovski, with the opening-day order still unclear. Denegal supplies the clearest recent baseline after throwing for 1,810 yards and nine touchdowns and adding four scores on the ground last season.
The decisive matchup is San Diego State’s returning skill group against Portland State’s defensive front and secondary. Lucky Sutton returns after rushing for 1,292 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2025, while Jordan Napier is back after making 48 catches for 632 yards. Portland State has to prevent Sutton from dictating down and distance without opening easy access for Napier outside. For San Diego State, the challenge is pairing that established production with clean quarterback decisions, regardless of who takes the first snap.
San Diego State can control the game by leaning on Sutton early, keeping its quarterback in manageable situations and making Portland State tackle repeatedly before expanding the passing game toward Napier. That approach would reduce the burden created by an unsettled quarterback order while allowing the Aztecs’ returning production to matter. Portland State’s route is the inverse: win early downs, force obvious passing situations and keep familiar personnel from producing immediate rhythm. The Vikings also need sustained possessions of their own; shortening the game and limiting San Diego State’s opportunities would give them the clearest path to keep pressure on the home side.
