Wyoming's best chance comes through the passing game, but that part of the offense has to improve on last season.
Wyoming’s Sept. 5 trip to Canvas Stadium provides an immediate opening-week test for two offenses still sorting out quarterback. The Cowboys list Tyler Hughes, Landon Sims, Mason Drube and Taylor Hasselbeck; the Rams list Tahj Bullock, Tommy Poholsky, Darius Curry and Tyler Lewis. Neither roster identifies a starter. Curry brings 740 passing yards and five touchdowns from 2025, but that experience does not settle Colorado State’s competition. With Mountain West Wyoming visiting Pac-12 Colorado State, both staffs must build a sound plan around whoever takes the first snap.
The decisive matchup is Wyoming’s rushing group against Colorado State’s run defense. Samuel Harris remains on the roster after producing 552 rushing yards and 184 receiving yards in 2025, and the Cowboys added running backs Markell Holman from Western Illinois and Diore Hubbard from West Virginia. Colorado State counters with experienced tacklers: Jake Jarmolowich recorded 72 tackles and five tackles for loss last season, while Lemondre Joe had 56 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. If that Rams pair closes interior lanes and keeps Harris and the newcomers from creating easy early-down gains, Wyoming’s eventual quarterback will inherit a much tougher assignment.

Wyoming’s cleanest route to control is patience: lean on Harris and the expanded backfield, avoid obvious passing downs and keep the quarterback choice from swallowing the game. Defensively, Jones Thomas and Ethan Stuhlsatz supply returning tackling production, while safety Travis Franklin Jr. arrives from Jacksonville State; that group must deny Colorado State’s quarterback an easy rhythm. The Rams can take command by winning first down on defense, forcing Wyoming to prove it can throw, then giving their own starter manageable situations. If Curry gets the call, his 2025 experience offers a useful reference point, not a guarantee. For either side, control starts with reducing the burden on an unsettled quarterback room rather than asking it to decide the night immediately.
