Washington can set the terms by establishing the run.

Washington State’s opening-week visit to Husky Stadium starts with a contrast in quarterback continuity. Washington brings back Demond Williams Jr., who completed 69.5% of his passes for 3,065 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025 while adding 612 rushing yards and six scores. Entering his third year in Jedd Fisch’s system, he gives the Huskies a stable centerpiece amid turnover elsewhere. Washington State retains substantial offensive production, including Zevi Eckhaus, but its roster does not establish whether Eckhaus or another quarterback will start. That unresolved choice shapes the Cougars’ approach.
The decisive collision is Washington State’s returning backfield against Washington’s rebuilt defensive interior. Kirby Vorhees returns after rushing for 576 yards in 2025, and Eckhaus added 371 on the ground. Washington counters with Elinneus Davis, the lone returning interior contributor identified in spring reporting, alongside freshman Derek Colman-Brusa and transfer DeSean Watts. They can lean on experienced linebackers Jacob Manu, Xe’ree Alexander, Taariq Al-Uqdah and Zaydrius Rainey-Sale. If the Cougars consistently reach that layer on favorable terms, they can keep Washington’s pressures honest; if Davis and the newcomers hold the point, Washington can make an unsettled quarterback work against a defined secondary including Alex McLaughlin.

Washington’s cleanest path is to let Williams’ passing efficiency and rushing ability set the terms while keeping a still-forming offensive line out of obvious passing situations. The Huskies need not force the game through an unsettled backfield or a receiving corps replacing much of last season’s production; their quarterback can distribute the strain. Washington State should shorten difficult downs with Vorhees, preserve balance with whichever quarterback wins the job and make Washington’s new interior defend sustained series. On defense, Caleb Francl and the Cougars must keep Williams from converting disruption into easy rushing yards. Whichever team protects its uncertain position groups should control the night.
