Indiana is built to lean on its offensive front and stay ahead of the chains.

North Texas visits Memorial Stadium on Sept. 5 for an opener that immediately tests two different kinds of reconstruction. Indiana begins its title defense with Curt Cignetti, offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan and defensive coordinator Bryant Haines still in place, but with major production gone and TCU transfer Josh Hoover expected to follow Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza at quarterback. North Texas is turning to a heavily remade roster; Tayven Jackson, Chaston Ditta, Chris Jimerson Jr. and Ziondre Williams are listed in its quarterback room, but no opening-day starter has been established.
The clearest matchup is North Texas’s rebuilt offense against the experienced center of Indiana’s defense. All-America tackle Tyrique Tucker can collapse the pocket from the interior, while linebackers Rolijah Hardy and Isaiah Jones return after combining for 181 tackles, 15 sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss last season. North Texas has imported Jackson, running back Jahiem White and tight end Drew Clemens, yet its returning-production profile shows how much must be integrated. If that reconstructed offense cannot keep Tucker, Hardy and Jones from dictating down and distance, the Mean Green will be asking an unsettled quarterback room to solve Haines’s adjustable 4-2-5 under pressure.

Indiana’s cleanest route to control is up front. Carter Smith, Drew Evans and Bray Lynch return on an offensive line bolstered by Wisconsin transfer Joe Brunner, giving Hoover a stable platform while the backs, receivers and tight ends sort out new roles. Sustained drives would also limit opportunities for a North Texas offense still assembling its pecking order. For the Mean Green, the formula is disruption and manageable situations: Brayden Knox offers at least one returning piece on defense, and that unit must prevent Indiana’s veteran line from turning the afternoon into a comfortable debut for Hoover. North Texas also needs White, Clemens and whichever quarterback emerges to create efficient early-down answers rather than live in obvious passing situations.
