Houston's best chance comes through the big-play offense, but that part of the offense has to improve on last season.

Oregon State’s opening-week trip to Houston carries an immediate question: how quickly can the Beavers settle their quarterback situation against a host that already knows where its offense begins? Houston returns Conner Weigman after he threw for 2,705 yards and 25 touchdowns and ran for 703 yards and 11 scores in 2025. Slade Nagle has called him the unquestioned starter. Oregon State lists Maalik Murphy, Gabarri Johnson and Kallen Gutridge at quarterback, but the roster does not establish who will take the first snap. Murphy threw for 1,802 yards last season; Johnson contributed as a passer and runner.
That uncertainty puts the Beavers’ passing game against Houston’s secondary at the center of the matchup. Murphy carries more 2025 passing experience, while Johnson adds a rushing element, but either would challenge a back end with proven playmakers. Corner Will James returns after three interceptions and two forced fumbles, while safeties Jordan Allen and Kentrell Webb supply experience inside; Webb made 71 tackles last season. Oregon State must protect the ball and avoid letting that group dictate passing downs. On the other side, Weigman’s connection with Amare Thomas—67 catches, 966 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2025—gives Houston a tested answer when the Beavers crowd the run.

Houston can control the game by letting Weigman’s dual-threat skill set stretch Oregon State, then finding Thomas when coverage tightens. Its rebuilt line is transfer-heavy, but Hurst, Anthony Boswell and Terrill arrive with all-conference or All-America recognition, providing an experienced foundation. Oregon State’s route is practical: keep its quarterback out of long-yardage situations, sustain possessions and make Houston drive the field instead of handing Weigman short fields. If the Beavers keep the pace manageable and make James, Allen and Webb tackle rather than hunt turnovers, the quarterback decision becomes less burdensome. If Houston creates passing downs, its veteran secondary can make that uncertainty decisive.
