2025 record: 9-3 · Big 12

Northern Arizona’s visit to Arizona Stadium gives Arizona an immediate chance to test the continuity at the center of its 2026 offense. Noah Fifita returns for his final season after throwing for 3,228 yards and a school-record 29 touchdowns in 2025, when the Wildcats climbed to third in Big 12 scoring. That makes this opener less about identifying the quarterback than seeing how cleanly Arizona can operate around him. Northern Arizona enters without a publicly established opening-day starter from a room that includes Donivan Dixon, Ty Pennington, Tak Tateoka and Bryce Herges at quarterback.
The decisive matchup is Arizona’s rebuilt offensive line against Northern Arizona’s defensive front. The Wildcats must replace three starters, with Tristan Bounds and Alexander Doost projected on the right side, Zach Henning at center, and Matthew Lado and Rhino Tapa’atoutai on the left. If that group gives Fifita a stable pocket, Arizona can lean on the timing and efficiency that drove last season’s offensive jump. For Northern Arizona, the assignment is collective: its front must compress the pocket, force hurried decisions and keep Arizona from turning early-down completions into a comfortable rhythm.
Arizona’s route to control is straightforward: protect Fifita, avoid giveaways and make Northern Arizona defend the full field before the visitors can settle in. Defensively, Taye Brown returns after 93 tackles and Chase Kennedy after four sacks, while a heavily reworked secondary has to communicate cleanly and prevent cheap explosives. Northern Arizona’s route is to shorten possessions, win field position and create negative plays that push Arizona into third-and-long. If the Lumberjacks can protect the ball, tackle securely and turn one takeaway or special-teams swing into a short field, they can keep the night uncomfortable; if not, Fifita’s experience can dictate the pace.
