Southern Miss has an opening-week home date with Alcorn State at M. M. Roberts Stadium, and the first question is not whether Southern Miss has experience at quarterback but how it will arrange it. Its current roster lists Braylon Braxton, Kyle McCormick, Landry Lyddy, Jacobe Robinson and John White without identifying a starter. Braxton is the proven option in that group after throwing for 3,053 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, while also contributing as a runner. Until the order is settled, Southern Miss enters the matchup with both continuity and a real decision to make.
The clearest matchup is Alcorn State’s offensive line against the pressure threat Southern Miss can create with Garrick Ponder. Ponder remains on the roster after producing 11.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 2025, so Alcorn cannot allow obvious passing downs to become a steady diet of disruptive snaps. Pittman’s 2025 production offers a template for staying on schedule, while Braxton—if he wins the job or has a role—brings an experienced passing and running element.
