Sacramento State’s visit to Eastern Michigan on Aug. 29 is an opening-week meeting at Rynearson Stadium. The first question is under center. Sacramento State lists Luke Sprague and Jamar Malone in its quarterback room, while Eastern Michigan lists five options, including Noah Kim. Neither roster settles the starting order. Kim, however, brings recent production after throwing for 2,817 yards and 18 touchdowns and adding six rushing scores for Eastern Michigan in 2025. That experience is part of the Eagles’ quarterback picture, provided he gets the call.
The clearest matchup is Sacramento State’s running game against Eastern Michigan’s veteran tacklers. Rodney Hammond Jr. remains on the Hornets’ roster after a 1,214-yard, 13-touchdown season, though a 2026 role has not been formally established. Eastern Michigan can counter with Bryce Llewellyn, who made 103 tackles last season, and Barry Manning, who added 75 tackles, two sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. The Eagles will look to keep Hammond from setting the tempo on early downs while accounting for Sam Adams II, who contributed as both a runner and receiver in 2025.

Sacramento State can lean on Hammond, involve Adams in the passing game and avoid obvious passing situations for whichever quarterback plays. Long possessions would limit Eastern Michigan’s opportunities to find rhythm. The Eagles’ response begins up front. Transfers Tyler Brumfield and Tyler McMillan arrive as tackles, with Cole Dellinger as an interior lineman, giving Eastern Michigan three additions around which to shape its protection. If that group creates clean early-down work and Kim plays, Eastern Michigan has an experienced 2025 producer available. If Llewellyn and Manning repeatedly put Sacramento State behind schedule, the Hornets’ unsettled quarterback picture could become central to the game.
