Central Michigan’s trip to University Stadium opens with both teams carrying an important question at quarterback, but not the same kind of uncertainty. The Chippewas list Angel Flores, Marcus Beamon, Daniel Gomez, Geno Seets and Jadyn Glasser, with no opening-day starter established. New Mexico also has an unsettled listed order, though Jack Layne remains on the roster after throwing for 2,486 yards and 13 touchdowns and adding four scores on the ground in 2025. That makes this a revealing opener: Central Michigan must settle its passing-game direction on the road, while the Lobos must decide whether Layne’s returning production translates into the lead role.
The clearest matchup is Central Michigan’s returning playmakers against two productive names back in New Mexico’s defense. Langston Lewis caught 43 passes for 596 yards last season, while Brock Townsend supplied 418 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns between rushing and receiving. They give whichever Chippewas quarterback plays two proven ways to stay on schedule. If Eck and Swaim keep Townsend from creating manageable downs, Central Michigan’s unsettled quarterback room will face much less comfortable situations.

Central Michigan’s clearest route is balance: recreate the rushing-and-receiving versatility Townsend showed, find Lewis on early downs and use Korver Demma’s demonstrated backfield disruption after his four sacks and nine tackles for loss last year. That approach would limit the burden on an unannounced quarterback. New Mexico can control the evening by keeping its offense out of obvious passing situations, giving its eventual quarterback clean chances and forcing Central Michigan to drive patiently against Eck and Swaim. Layne’s 2025 production gives the Lobos a credible option, not a confirmed starter. Whichever team gets steadier quarterback play without abandoning its returning strengths should dictate this opener.
