Delaware opens its 2026 season at home against Merrimack on Sept. 3 with a chance to turn substantial offensive continuity into an immediate result. Delaware enters the matchup as a Conference USA program with Nick Minicucci still on the roster after he threw for 3,671 yards and 23 touchdowns and ran for 10 more in 2025, although no opening-day starter has been established. Merrimack brings a four-player quarterback room of Cole Meehan, AJ Hairston Jr., Michael O'Connor and Jake Attaway, with its own starter and snap distribution also unsettled.
The clearest matchup is Delaware’s passing game against Merrimack’s back seven. Sean Wilson returns after catching 66 passes for 850 yards last season, giving whichever Delaware quarterback takes the first snap an experienced target. Merrimack’s defensive roster includes Jacob Wilson, Juice Ricks, Rajahn Cooper, Bryce Gentry-Warrick, Danny Simms and Ayden Bowe, but roster placement alone does not establish their roles. Up front, Delaware must keep Merrimack from creating obvious passing downs, while Merrimack’s coverage group has to prevent short completions from becoming explosive gains.

Delaware’s cleanest route to control is to protect the ball, stay ahead of the chains and make Merrimack defend the full width of the field, then let Gavin Moul—back after 112 tackles in 2025—help settle the defense on early downs. Merrimack can counter by winning field position, producing negative plays and forcing third-and-long, where an opener can become uncomfortable even for an experienced offense. When Merrimack has the ball, avoiding turnovers and limiting Delaware’s extra possessions matter more than chasing an early shootout; if Delaware suppresses explosive plays and dictates third down, its returning production should have room to show.
