The Week 1 visit from VMI matters less as a finished-product reveal than as Virginia Tech’s first live test under James Franklin. The Hokies spent spring installing broadly, with Franklin planning to narrow the menu after repeating that work in camp, so clean execution will say more than playbook size. The largest decision remains at quarterback. Bill Roth reported after spring that Ethan Grunkemeyer, Bryce Baker, Kelden Ryan and Troy Huhn were still competing, while Franklin said every practice throw was being charted and no starter had been chosen. Whoever emerges will inherit an offense that needs a steadier passing identity, but does have returning receiver Ayden Greene as its most proven target.
The decisive matchup is VMI’s offensive line against Virginia Tech’s interior defensive front. Kemari Copeland is the established centerpiece after recording 4.5 sacks in 2025, and Elhadj Fall also supplied inside pressure with 2.5 sacks. If that pair creates penetration without extra help, the Hokies can force long-yardage downs while allowing unsettled edge and linebacker rotations to play with less strain. On the other side, Virginia Tech can protect its eventual starter by leaning on Marcellous Hawkins, who rushed for 749 yards last season, and by giving Greene manageable opportunities rather than demanding immediate downfield precision.
Virginia Tech’s route to control is straightforward: run efficiently, keep the quarterback out of obvious passing situations and let Copeland’s group attack the middle of VMI’s protection. The Hokies also need the details Franklin emphasized—alignment, ball security and communication—because a rebuilt secondary and a still-forming offensive identity leave little reason to treat the opener as automatic. VMI’s route is to compress the game: win field position, create negative plays, get off the field on third down and make Virginia Tech sustain long drives without turnovers. Preventing explosive plays and turning one short field into points would keep pressure on a home team still sorting important roles.
